Finding Solace in the Great Outdoors: My Journey with The Hike with Mike Foundation, by Liam.

The COVID-19 lockdown left many of us grappling with isolation and deteriorating mental health. As someone who has long battled anxiety, I found myself in an even darker place during this period. The walls of my home began to feel suffocating. I knew I needed a change, but taking that first step seemed daunting.

Enter The Hike with Mike Foundation. I stumbled upon their group hikes online and, despite my nerves, decided to give it a try. The morning of the hike, my anxiety was in full force. Every fibre of my being wanted to stay in bed, to avoid the unknown and the potential discomfort of meeting new people. But something pushed me forward.

Arriving at the meeting point, I was a bundle of nerves. Would I fit in? Could I keep up? What if I made a fool of myself? But as I met the group, those fears began to melt away. The atmosphere was welcoming, with no pressure or judgment.

As we set off on the trail, something magical happened. The fresh air and the gentle chatter of my fellow hikers created a relaxed atmosphere. I found myself talking to strangers, sharing laughs, and forgetting about my worries. Being surrounded by nature and like-minded individuals was just what I needed. We shared stories, cracked jokes, and supported each other through the challenging parts of the trail. By the end of the hike, I felt lighter.

This experience taught me the power of stepping out of your comfort zone, even when every instinct tells you to stay put. It reminded me of the healing power of nature and the importance of community, especially during tough times.

My connection with The Hike with Mike Foundation didn't end with that first hike. As I continued to participate in their events, I found myself increasingly drawn to their mission and the positive impact they were having on people's lives. The transformation I witnessed in myself and others was profound, and I felt compelled to contribute more.

This newfound passion led me to take a significant step: I decided to join the charity as a Trustee. It was a way for me to give back to an organisation that had given me so much. As a Trustee, I now have the opportunity to help shape the foundation's future and ensure that others can benefit from the same life-changing experiences I had.

To anyone struggling with mental health issues, particularly anxiety, I can't recommend joining a group hike enough! The Hike with Mike Foundation provide a supportive environment to challenge yourself, connect with others, and find peace in nature.

That first hike was a turning point for me, and I'm grateful I pushed through my initial fears. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, the things we're most anxious about can lead to the most rewarding experiences – and even open doors to new passions and responsibilities.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is a journey, not a destination. And sometimes, that journey involves actual hiking boots.
